Indentation Hardness and Elastic Recovery of Some Hardwood Species

The purpose of the study was to measure Brinell hardness (HB) six wood species and evaluate ability recover depth imprint (self-re-deformation). Straight-grain clear samples ash, beech, alder, birch, iroko, linden were prepared. Measurements made in three main reference timber cross-sections: radial (R), tangential (T), axial/longitudinal (L) with two measuring loads 30 kG 100 (294.2 N 980.7 N). tested could be classified into hard (ash, beech), medium-hard (alder, iroko), soft (linden) species. HBs each differed cross-sections, i.e., side (R, T) end (L). Higher HB values obtained at load all cross-sections. lowest influence measurement force value on revealed for (linden: 107–118%). This visible other five species, ranging from 125% 176%. percentage temporary total (x/H) varied 12 33% (linden 12–18%—the self-re-deformation ability; beech 25–33%—the highest ability). results this underline that higher density wood, hardness, and, simultaneously, greater used, measured. wood’s R T cross-sections depends used. In contrast, only L cross-section. Those observations imply compaction cell structure during compression is mainly non-destructive, while longitudinal deformation (the buckling walls fracture ends cells) a great degree destructive irreversible. These can used construction furniture sectors, especially when designing products planning woodworking highly loaded floors elements.
